Cicada on Chain Bridge

Cicada on Chain Bridge, originally uploaded by soleil1016.

This photo got a fair amount of attention yesterday when it was named Photo of the Day on DCist.com. Coming from the blissfully low-bug-populated Pacific NW, I find the late summer insects here in the DC area pretty disgusting. The cicadas in particular are too big for my taste... although this one was better looking than some. =)

Captured with the ultra wide-angle EF-S 10-22mm lens, which happened to be on my camera at the time this guy landed at my feet. I was surprised at what a decent job it did of focusing on a subject so close to the lens (within a few inches!).

EXIF:

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 22 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Excellent photo! If you stay here another 11 years, you'll be here for the 17-year Cicada cycle. That's when the cicadas all come out and mate. The air literally hums for weeks and you see these buggers everywhere!
